Express Success in Meningie
A record eighty-two entries was received at the annual Meningie Motorcycle Clubs Pony Express on Sunday June 28. In perfect conditions the tag team race also attracted a huge crowd of spectators to watch the event which was sponsored by Bridgeland Motorcycles, Bonney’s Hardware and Electrical and Coonalpyn Farm Machinery with all the prizes donated. There were even several spectators from the sky with various flying craft hovering overhead during the day. The main event of the day was the gruelling Senior Class race with a record 35 riders battling for more than two hours over both the motocross and endure tracks covering more than eight kilometres in each loop before changing riders with some participants riding solo. The coveted first place was taken out by Richard Barker and Josh Hoskins, but the placings were so close, that there was some confusion with the results in the end with the first five teams being only single points apart and a tie for second position discovered on a count-back the next day. That second spot was finally awarded to two local teams, Shaun Cunneen and Mark Stephenson as well as Scott Liebelt and Rhys Fischer with the third place awarded to Sam Artini and Tyrone Igady. There was also equal firsts in the veteran’s class with Richard Ytsma and Mark Rev tying with Chris Major and Joe Bunnick. Second prize was awarded to D Bradbrook and Todd Cusack and third was won by Craig Trottman and Rob Vlaanderen. The team of brothers Mike and Perry Gibbs took out the quad class Pony Express with Richard Gould and Darren Jenki taking home second prize and Alistar Watson and Michael Traynor winning third. Joel Rinaldi and Nick Hartmann won the Pro-Light class with Jack Simonds and Bradley Pickering coming in second. Local riders Sam Ayres and Tim Halliday took home the third prizes. Nathan Ayres and Duke Vlaanderen were the winners of the 125 Junior-Lights class with locals, Jackie Gibbs, one of only three female riders on the day, and Sam Bird taking out second while Bill Traeger and Callum Norsworthy took home the third prize. The 80/85 class Pony Express event saw the teams take to the motocross track only at Meningie with first place going to local riders Jace Stephenson and Joe Bird. Second place went to Daniel Standley and Ethan Rickaby and third spot was won by Travis Klitcher and Jordan Heinrich. The mini bike class and 60/60 cc classes are not tag team events and the first prize was awarded to the only entrant in the mini bike class, Gena Mandfield while Matthew Bunnick and Sam Hunt took out equal first in the 60/65 cc class with Joss Hunt taking home the second prize.
